Melissa Boughton

Melissa Boughton joined Southern Coalition for Social Justice in 2021 and serves as Communications Director. Previously, she led communications at Duke Law’s Wilson Center for Science and Justice and spent a decade as a journalist. Her reporting included courts and crime beats at NC Policy Watch and The Post and Courier in Charleston, where she was part of a team named a 2016 Pulitzer Prize finalist for coverage of the Walter Scott killing. A Texas native, Melissa has lived in North Carolina since 2016 and is a 2010 graduate of the Mayborn School of Journalism at the University of North Texas.
